Sustainable and profitable? FoodBridge equips agricultural advisors to better support farmers
What if adopting sustainable farming practices could also be good for the bottom line? That’s exactly what FoodBridge aims to document with its newest project, carried out in partnership with Groupe ProConseil and Forest Lavoie Conseil, and supported by the MAPAQ.
This project, part of the PALCCB program, is designed to help agricultural advisors guide farmers toward practices that are both environmentally sound and economically viable. Because yes—it is possible to do better for the climate without breaking the bank!
So what exactly are we doing?
We’re starting on the ground. The first step is to identify the barriers preventing farmers from adopting agro-environmental practices. Then, we’ll use five typical farm profiles to illustrate smart crop rotations and practices which yield real results for producers, both in soil health and long-term profitability.
This work will then be turned into practical tools for advisors: summary sheets, explainer videos, online training… all in clear, accessible language, ready to be applied directly in the field. One of the tools we’ll be using is Rotation$+, a platform that helps assess the profitability of crop rotations.
Why does this matter?
When advisors have the tools they need, they can better support farmers in making smart, informed decisions. And the entire food system benefits: more sustainable practices, more profitable farms, and greater resilience to climate change.
With this project, we aim to reach dozens of advisors across Quebec and generate positive impacts for more than 2,000 farm businesses.
